It’s one of the toughest questions that my former patients and now, current students ask me…..What do I do now that I have this new brain? Who am I supposed to be? Trying to find an answer is daunting, frustrating and frankly sometimes depressing. There is no easy answer, just like when you were graduating from high school and deciding “What are you going to be when you grow up?” The difference now is, your best laid out plans just took a detour.
The new plan? First, Give yourself time to grieve. Schedule it and then pick an end point. “Saturday – I’m going to give myself until Saturday to feel like crap and then I’m going to move on”. Second, pick a starting point. It doesn’t have to be the solution to everything, but just start somewhere. The hardest part is taking that first step.
Last, track your progress. Write out your plan and keep in visible, using the ‘ol sticker chart if you have to. It’s a proven fact that you will stick with it and be more motivated with something tangible staring at you every morning. Time is not something you can speed up, so patience is key here. And wherever you are in your plan, remember, you are enough.
